Narrative retell
Narrative retell is a very important aspect of human language. Think of how many times a week we find ourselves retelling a funny story, or recapping our favorite show to a friend. Humans have a deep need to tell stories. It helps us connect with one another and it expands our world. In order to be able to tell our own stories effectively, we must also be able to retell the stories that we read, see or hear. In the narrative retell groups that I have with students we work on learning the framework for a story. Every story follows the same framework no matter if it is a 500 page Harry Potter novel or if it a 20 page picture book. There is always a main character, a setting, a problem, a feeling about this problem, a plan of action to solve the problem, the attempts to solve the problem, a final wrap up when the problem has been solved and how the character feels in the end. If kids can learn this structure it can improve their ability to retell stories they are reading in school as well as to tell their own stories. It gives them a framework to follow.
After my students have completed a graphic organizer that we work on together for their narrative, I have them record themselves on the online app called Flipgrid. These recordings help me to collect information about their ability to retell narratives and to determine how much progress they have made.
